Our cleaning how-to

Summer - M-Day

Moving is an important event! It's exciting, but it's also stressful. Here are 10 tips that can help you get through this big step without any problems.

1. Measurements

Before you move, go to your new home and thoroughly measure the rooms. That way, you can get a scale model–or at least a rough idea!–and know what you can and can’t keep from your current home. Don't forget the window measurements for the curtains. Measurements are also very useful when shopping for furniture and decorations!

2. Garage sale

A few weeks before the move, it's time to do the last major cleaning of your house. You've probably accumulated a ton of accessories, clothes and other finds without even realizing it. Take advantage of your neighbourhood garage sale to get rid of the things you don't want to move into your new home. As an added bonus, it's good for the circular economy and for your wallet!

3. Housekeeping: start off on the right foot

It's better to do a thorough cleaning before you move in than after! As soon as your new home is empty, arm yourself with Hertel multi-purpose cleaners and disinfecting wipes to keep everything shiny. That way, you won't have to work too hard on M-Day and you'll be able to move into a clean house or apartment that smells super fresh.

4. Time

Packing, shopping and going back and forth always take longer than you think. Try to plan ahead by starting to prepare a few weeks in advance. This will avoid unpleasant surprises and unnecessary stress.

5. Garbage bags

Looking for an easy way to move your clothes without having to take them off the hangers? Cover them with a large garbage bag! Once you're in front of your new closet, you can simply remove this improvised cover and hang your clothes directly on the rod. We bet this quick and easy trick will be a life-saver (especially when it comes to carrying your bedding)!

6. Colour coding

Use a colour code on each of your moving boxes—prepared in advance, *ahem*!—to keep track of where things have to go and to make it easier for people who are lending a hand. For example, put pink tape on the boxes that go in the bathroom, blue for the ones in the kitchen, yellow for the living rooms... You get the idea. It's an easy and useful method, we don't see why you would do without it!

7. Lists

If you're a fan of lists, this tip is for you! Stick a list on each box to indicate what's inside. This will make it much easier to unpack your boxes logically and quickly, without spreading yourself too thin.

(We're guessing you've already thought about making a global list of all the things you need to do before your big move... right? Well, now is the time to do it.)

8. Taking pictures

Do you like the layout of your bedroom or certain rooms in your current home? Why not take pictures before you pack everything up? That way, you can reproduce the layout of your old home in your new one!

9. Helpers

The July 1st moving fest is quite the phenomenon in Quebec. So get a head start and book your friends before somebody else does! You can also put out a call on your social networks: there can never be too many pairs of hands to lift boxes or to become Cleaner-in-Chief for a day! If need be, pizza at the end of the day is always a compelling argument!

10. Essentials kit

The night before M-Day, pack a box with key items for the next day: a tape measure, utility knives, tools, all-purpose cleaning and disinfecting products, paper and pencils. Also, always have Hertel cleaning and disinfecting wipes on hand, they could save the day more often than not!

Don't worry, things will run smoothly (just make sure to drink water, because it might get real hot!).
